Chicago Federation

of Labor

CFL Logo.jpg

The CFL has fought for economic, social, and racial justice for all working people for more than 125 years. Sparked by late 19th century labor struggles like the Haymarket Affair, Pullman strike and fight for an 8-hour workday, the CFL was chartered in 1896. The CFL established a unified voice to fight for the benefit of all working people in Chicago.
Rarely does a major event, initiative, campaign, or project in Chicago or Cook County succeed without the CFL’s support and involvement . The CFL is the uniting force of Chicago’s labor movement and one of the key reasons Chicago is the hometown of the American labor movement. Under the leadership of President Robert G. Reiter, Jr. since 2016, the CFL added organizing capacity, won new rights for Chicago workers, passed the Workers’ Rights Amendment, and helped working people navigate a once-in-a-generation pandemic.

Pullman House Project logo.png

The mission of the Pullman House Project is to interpret life of workers and their families in the original Town of Pullman. This will be accomplished by staging selected residential properties to focus on the housing and lives of Pullman’s diverse workforce. Currently the Bielenberg Foundation owns or has an interest in 6 Pullman residential properties with plans to acquire  additional properties as the program advances.

Two exhibit units have been developed and are now open to the public as part of the Pullman House Project Tour program. The Welcome Center at One Florence Boulevard is the starting location for our tour program and home of the Foundation offices. The Pullman Club Coffee shop is also located in the Welcome Center and provides an additional source of revenue for the Foundation to fund its mission.
